Day 5 of the my 12 days of photos and it is most certainly time to share some pictures of Josh. We managed to get another shoot in the calendar during 2022, and created a gritty set of images that I really like.
Josh is a model who I’ve photographed before, he made it in to my 12-days of pictures last year too. Early October meant the weather was very unpredictable, and so for this shoot we headed indoors to keep out of the high winds as much as the rain.
Initially I worked with the limited natural light, pushing the ISO on the EOS R6 up to give fast enough shutter speeds. While I took pictures Josh picked up a book…
- EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM
- 1/160s, f/1.6, ISO 640
I asked Josh to slide in to the end of the sofa, to lower the backlight, though it also meant a little more ISO but nothing to worry the EOS R6. Also strongly backlit subjects are harder for the camera to accurately focus on, so this second shot is a little easier for the camera to focus on.
- EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM
- 1/160s, f/1.6, ISO 800
Enough of the ambient light photos, it was time to add some light of my own and some more grit with black and white images. I do set my camera to a monochrome picture style so that I see the tones, not the colours on the LCD and in the viewfinder. Josh sat on the stairs and I brought the light in from above over the banister.
- RF 28-70mm F2L USM @ 32mm
- 1/200s, f/2, ISO 100
- RF 28-70mm F2L USM @ 34mm
- 1/200s, f/2, ISO 100
- RF 28-70mm F2L USM @ 28mm
- 1/200s, f/2, ISO 100
- RF 28-70mm F2L USM @ 34mm
- 1/200s, f/2, ISO 100
With me on the landing at the top of the stairs I decided to shoot through the uprights of the staircase, the flash in a small soft box is above me and in front of Josh.
- RF 28-70mm F2L USM @ 28mm
- 1/200s, f/2, ISO 100
- RF 28-70mm F2L USM @ 50mm
- 1/200s, f/2, ISO 100
- RF 28-70mm F2L USM @ 41mm
- 1/200s, f/2, ISO 100
- RF 28-70mm F2L USM @ 52mm
- 1/200s, f/2, ISO 100
Working with a rugged male model is a different prospect and I enjoy the opportunity to shoot a completely different style of work.
Day 5 of 12 done, see you tomorrow for some more photos.
