Good news I’ve made a page where you can find firmware update for RF lenses. Not just RF lenses, but EF lenses and other accessories.
Over the recent months, I’ve delivered plenty of workshops and one common thing I’v learnt is that people rarely update the firmware in their cameras, so the idea that lenses and accessories might have firmware updates too was quite a surprise to almost every person.
I’ve noticed firmware updates for EOS lenses and accessories in the past, but there’s not a reference that shows what is available and where to get it… so I made one, click the button below 🙂
Firmware updates for EOS lenses & accessories
Firmware updates for RF lenses
Canon’s latest EOS R system cameras have been subject to a lot of updates since their introduction, and so have the RF lenses. I have identified updates for four different RF lenses so far, including the extremely popular RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM “kit lens”. Click the button above or the image at the top to see all the available updates for RF lenses, also the BG-E22 battery grip for the EOS R and for the Speedlite EL-100 too! I also know that the EF EOS R control ring mount adapter can have firmware updates, but I haven’t found one yet.
EOS DSLR and M-series lenses and accessories too
While the RF lenses are the focus here, there’s a range of updates for EF, EF-S and EF-M lenses, wireless file transmitters, and Speedlites all with links to get the update for yourself.
How to check your current firmware version
How do you know what firmware you have, it’s all great having my list, but does it apply to your kit? Here’s how you check the current version in your camera.
- Switch on your camera.
- Select one of the P, Av, Tv or M exposure modes. Firmware version is not shown when using auto or scene modes.
- Press the MENU button and navigate to the firmware version, usually in the yellow tabbed set up menus
- Press the SET button or tap on the item if you have a touchscreen LCD.
In my picture above I have an EOS R with an EF 40mm f/2.8 STM lens and a Speedlite 430EX III-RT powered on sitting in the hotshoe. All have the latest version of firmware in them, so I’m good to go.
One request; if you do find a firmware update for anything I haven’t listed then please get in touch? I have tried to be thorough in my research, but you know how big this EOS system is.

Need a camera firmware update, or not sure if you do?
While I was working on the new page, I revisited my ever popular camera firmware update page and refreshed every camera I could find a firmware update for too.
