Looking back at some of my favourite photos from 2018. For each of the 12 days (of Christmas) I’m sharing one of my favourite pictures I’ve taken during 2018.

#5 – Gemma

A trip to a local studio for a shoot with Gemma yielded a good variety of results in a couple of hours. I had started out using a large beauty dish, and then progressed on to an LED ring light, finally ending with a gridded strip box. It’s the picture with the strip box that is my main picture today – something very different to the other shots taken, and one that like a lot. I had the strip box moved in very close to Gemma, so in post it had to be removed from the frame. Fortunately it was in the dark space in front of Gemma so a simple adjustment and some cloning in Lightroom was all that was needed. Then I moved the colours using just the white balance adjustments.

Camera settings – Gemma

  • EOS 5D Mark IV
  • EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM @ 33mm
  • 1/160s, f/7.1, ISO 100

This additional picture of Gemma was taken with the LED ring light. I gives distinctive catchlights, with a generally smooth look, but it is limited in power.

Camera settings – Gemma #2

  • EOS 5D Mark IV
  • EF 85mm f/1.8 USM
  • 1/160s, f/3.5, ISO 400

See you tomorrow for another picture…
