Over the course of 2017 I’ve taken plenty of photos that have been fun, challenging or fortunate. For each of the 12 days (of Christmas) I’m sharing one of my favourite pictures from 2017.

#8 – Emma

I have worked with Emma, on a few occasions this year, mostly for workshops and events. I hope to do some more proper shoots with her in 2018.

This shot was taken with the local camera club group in the summer. The aim was to try off-camera flash outside one summer evening. I set up four Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT flashes in the Lastolite Ezybox medium octa box. Two flashes linked to my ST-E3-RT transmitter which was passed round the Canon users. The other pair linked to the Yongnuo YN-E3-RT transmitter and usable by people with any brand of camera with a hotshoe. Both transmitters set to manual 1/4 power so the flashes would recharge quickly.  I only took a handful of shots myself, but just about everything came right in this one; Emma is airborne, hair flicked to one side – it just worked.

Camera settings – main image

  • EOS 5D Mark IV
  • EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM lens
  • 1/200s, f/5.6, ISO 400
  • Speedlite flash

See you tomorrow for another picture…
