Over the course of 2017 I’ve taken plenty of photos that have been fun, challenging or fortunate. For each of the 12 days (of Christmas) I’m sharing one of my favourite pictures from 2017.

#4 – Orienne

A mate asked my advice about working with high speed sync, and fast aperture lenses in the studio. I offered to let him test out a few options on the lens front that I had; EF 50mm f/1.2L USM, EF 85mm f/1.8 USM, EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM and EF 135mm f/2L USM. He suggested we meet at his studio, and he would get a model to join us. Then he could test how each lens suited the results he wanted and the space in his studio.

Orienne modelled for the lens test, and she had such great skin and make-up. A pair of big glasses, a fake fur wrap and that was it. Lighting with a beauty dish on studio flash. Working at maximum aperture the challenge is to pick the focus point carefully. I used the EOS 5D Mark IV’s spot AF and moved it to the position, rather than use focus-lock-recompose.

It was an expensive test… he subsequently purchased both the EF 85mm f/1.8 USM and EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, taking advantage of a Canon UK cashback promotion on the macro lens.

Camera settings

See you tomorrow for another picture…
