Over the course of 2016 I’ve taken plenty of photos that have been fun, challenging or fortunate. For each of the 12 days (of Christmas) I’m sharing one of my favourite pictures from 2016.
#8 – John
Actually this is the last shot from the EOS 5D Mark III. After the shoot with Abby I was asked to give a short photography talk to a local group. I took a couple of photos – about 10 in total – of the people who came to the talk, this is one of them.
We’d talked about considering how light falls across people’s faces. To illustrate the point I used a 60cm x 60cm Lastolite softbox to light John. Keeping the light close would give rapid fall off on the right of the frame. But with a comparatively big source close up it would be soft too. Moving John several feet from the plain wall behind him meant that the light would only skim the wall.
I took just two shots of John, this is the first one, proof that E-TTL works some of the time.
