Over the course of 2016 I’ve taken plenty of photos that have been fun, challenging or fortunate. For each of the 12 days (of Christmas) I’m sharing one of my favourite pictures from 2016.

#11 – Bill & Phyll – smooth talking

A friend had shown some of his pictures from a shoot with a group of creatives called the Dream Project. I was interested to find out more and chose to join the next shoot. Dream Project brings great models, make-up, hair, stylists, designers and photographers together in interesting venues for some great shoots.

With my EOS 5D Mark IV in my hand and a couple of bags of Speedlites and modifiers I headed down to Kent for the shoot. After photographing many of the models individually there were several groups set up.

I kept my soft boxes up and ready, when several others had switched to on-camera flash to make it faster to get round different groups. I did use E-TTL as I couldn’t rely on the models being in a location for very long. Bill and Phyll looked amazing and the dynamics of working with multiple models and creatives was fantastic. Knowing that I’d need some rapid recycle times I raised the ISO on the EOS 5D Mark IV to reduce the amount of flash power each frame needed.

I also found a new love in my “prime year”, the EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM zoom lens. This lens has replaced my old EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM and I’m loving the sharpness and not missing the reach on all my cameras.

Camera settings

  • EOS 5D Mark IV
  • EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM lens at 50mm
  • 1/60s, f/5.6, ISO 500
  • Speedlite flash

See you tomorrow for another picture…
