Radio controlled flash comes to the Speedlite 430EX
The new Speedlite 430EX III-RT is an updated Speedlite 430EX II with the addition of Canon’s radio flash controlled operation. Closely based on the 430EX II the new flash works on both optical and radio systems and has a guide number of 43m at ISO 100. The compact sized flash is smaller and lighter than the previous 430EX models, yet is still powered by four readily available AA batteries. The flash will automatically zoom over a 24-105mm range, and the built-in wide panel widens the coverage to 14mm. Two new dedicated flash accessories are included; the bounce flash adapter SBA-E2 and the orange coloured SCF-E2 to convert the flash colour temperature to match tungsten lights.
There’s a catchlight panel to add a speck of light in the subjects eyes when bouncing the flash. The flash head can be rotated 180 degrees to the right and 150 degrees to the left.
As with the previous 430EX models the new Speedlite 430EX III-RT does not have a connector for the CP-E4 battery pack.
Radio wireless master and slave
UPDATE: 11:30 8th July 2015
I have now had some updated information about the capabilities of the new Speedlite 430EX III-RT, particularly important for master and slave operation.
When set to optical wireless the flash can only be used as a slave, NOT a master (shame)
When radio wireless is used the flash can be set to either master or slave mode
A maximum of sixteen devices can be used in the radio system. This includes the master. Therefore the Speedlite 430EX III-RT can control five groups of flashes – same as Speedlite 600EX-RT / ST-E3-RT, but only a total of 15 slaves can be used.
According to the specifications sheet from Canon, the Speedlite 430EX III-RT can either be a master or slave with both optical and wireless systems. However there appears to be something odd with the press release stating that fifteen flashes can be controlled per group with up to five groups when previously at total of 16 devices including the master was possible in the Canon RT systems. The SPEEDLITE 430EX III-RT joins Canon’s hugely flexible Radio Transmitter (RT) system, providing users with the flexibility to control up to five groups of RT flashes with up to 15 flashes per group, at distances of up to 30m away. The SPEEDLITE 430EX III-RT can also be controlled by Canon’s ST-E3-RT or Speedlite 600EX-RT units, further expanding the available options for professionals and enthusiasts. Specifications and press release claim that the 430EX III-RT is also a master for the optical wireless system, thought there are no images showing the flash as an optical master. I’m really pleased to see the flash is a master for both systems, as it would make a good on-camera flash or flash master for the EOS 6D camera, and with the suggested pricing will make it an attractive alternative to using the ST-E3-RT.

The power of light in the palm of your hand
The new SPEEDLITE 430EX III-RT is Canon’s most capable mid-range Speedlite flash to date. A maximum Guide Number of 43 at ISO 100 provides enough power to light subjects in a wide range of conditions, with the flexibility to work alongside additional flashes using the radio or optical remote control system. An ideal flash for creative photographers, the SPEEDLITE 430EX III-RT enables users to experiment with off-camera lighting set-ups, working alongside Canon’s existing radio or optical wireless flash control systems as a master or slave. Also compatible with cameras that feature an Integrated Speedlite Transmitter, including the EOS 760D and EOS 70D, the SPEEDLITE 430EX III-RT can be used instantly as an off-camera flash with output and power controllable from the camera menu.
Reduced in size compared to its predecessor, the SPEEDLITE 430EX III-RT provides photographers with a portable additional source of light, and offers faster and silent power recycling – ensuring the flash is discreet and always ready for the next shot. Additionally, the bounce adapter allows for a softer spread of light from the flash, perfect for shooting indoors when a more natural, flattering light is required.
An included orange colour filter allows users to match or contrast the colour of the flash light with the light sources around them, and an integrated catch-light panel provides the opportunity to add a sparkle of light to bring portraits to life. The SPEEDLITE 430EX III-RT also features a new and enhanced illuminated dot matrix LCD display, which provides easy control over every aspect of the flash, and a multi-control dial provides shortcuts to the main functionality.
