Canon has introduced a new Selphy dye-sub printer; the Selphy CP1000. I recall the first Selphy printers being announced and there have been several updates and changes over the years, but almost all the printers use the same ink and paper consumables so if you need to update your old machine the chances are the new one uses the same ink and paper set.
I have one of the older models and it gets used by the family for quick prints from their PowerShot & IXUS cameras. Great when they need a “picture for school” and are leaving in five minutes.
The Selphy CP1000 now adds a new media for square 50mm x 50mm stickers – good for Instagram type pictures. Connectivity is via a PictBridge port – most Canon and other brand cameras have this, CF and SD card slots or there is a USB port so you can print direct from a computer just like any other printer.
What makes the Selphy printer range so good is that they use dye-sublimation technology instead of inkjet. This means prints are dry and already have a clear UV protection coating on as they leave the printer. My kids when younger used to enjoy the printer performance as the image appeared over a series of four passes of the paper through the printer. I have even taken the Selphy on holiday to print my own pictures and sent the prints as postcards. The media has a standard postcard layout on the back.
